Proposed Workshop Itinerary – Subject to Conditions

Lake District / Borrowdale Valley

Morning

  • Borrowdale Valley taking in Derwent Water and Manesty
  • Guided session on using light direction, layering, and foreground interest in woodland.
  • Up to Ashness bridge and surrounding woodland with a chance of a short hike up to an overlook down Borrowdale valley. Chance to use telephoto for picking out details in the landscape. (Depending on group fitness)
  • Coffee/snack break, with focus on simplifying woodland chaos and identifying natural leading lines.

Lunch

  • Packed Lunch or we can eat in Keswick

Afternoon

  • We can then move on to Langstrath to explore the various pools along the beck, perfect for more intimate compositions. The oak trees lining the water are full of character and offer plenty of photographic interest.
  • Alternatively, we can head into the woodlands along the shores of Derwentwater, an area of temperate rainforest rich with moss-covered trees, lichens, and ferns. These sheltered woodlands offer endless opportunities for intimate, detail-driven photography, especially in soft or overcast light. The combination of ancient trees, tangled roots, and moisture in the air creates a timeless, almost primeval feel—ideal for slowing down and really refining composition and seeing.
All of this is, of course, subject to change depending on the weather conditions on the day. That said, there’s no need to worry—this area offers a wealth of alternative locations, allowing us to adapt plans as needed and still make the most of the conditions we’re given. Flexibility is key, and changing weather often presents new and unexpected photographic opportunities.
